What you need to know about Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz is the complete opposite of Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas. Even though it is located on the same island, it has nothing to do with each other especially since Puerto de la Cruz used to be a small fishing village that has grown into a gigantic city and the other two are really built for tourism.
The beaches do not really play a big role here either, there are two small beaches but the rest is not really used because swimming is very dangerous and the black stones and the black sand of the lava are not nice to lie on.
The two most important beaches of Puerto de la Cruz are the small Playa Matíanez and the somewhat larger Playa Jardín with terraces of the bars and restaurants that are located nearby. You can find real life in the center, in the small streets, and also on the boulevard along the coast. Here you can find many ice cream parlors, but also terraces of bars and restaurants and shops among the many street artists who are trying to make some money.
On the boulevard of Puerto de la Cruz you can find everything from traders who sell counterfeit goods to Spanish artists who make music or people who imitate a living statue. On the boulevard is also the San Telmo chapel from the 18th century that is the symbol of Puerto de la Cruz and another place of interest is from the year 1600 and is also called the San Francisco church that is built in the typical Canarian style the other islands.
You can find a nice viewpoint at the castle of San Felipe, which also served as a fortress and today offers beautiful views over the beach of Playa Jardín and nearby Punta Brava. Because the weather in Puerto de la Cruz often requires cooling, it was decided to construct an artificial lake called Lago Martíanez. A nice outing to do with a family is to go to the Loro Parque where parrots in particular play an important role but where you can also find many other animals. This animal park is located in the west of and you can easily reach it if you get on the tourist train at Plaza de los Reyes Católicos that will take you to the park for free and back.
